Fond memories of this one. The first port that I consumed in quantity when we first came to the UK in 2005.

Re: NV Sandeman 20 year old tawny

Oh I had this last night as well. Less ethyl acetate on the nose but agree it is a lightweight, elegant style. Nice walnut rancio finish of moderate length. Good from me.

This is most pleasing. Mrs S is somewhat eccentric so far as which hand is dominant as one might expect growing up right-handed in a left-handed family. I would say right handed is safest.

2005 Fonseca LBV (unfiltered)

Found this for £10.99 up in Windemere while in holiday and was sacrificed accordingly. A dense dark red colour almost opaque and cloudy despite a 24 hour vertical stance. Initially this started off full of fruit, cherries predominant. Very tasty. However there was a surprising amount of cedar. I wou...

Re: Farewell to Griff

Thank you! Have had the head down at the moment. How does the 4th of June suit other forumites? I shall bring the better half as well. As for theme, will a simple BYOB suffice? I have a colheita that hasn't been imbibed recently according to the forum; a VP requires further thought.

Re: How long to decant?

Nothing obviously wrong with the bottle. I have limited storage space, and a dozen half bottles of 1991 Fonseca Guimaraens on the way. Something had to go, and the 83 Dow's number was up. An '83 Smith-Woodhouse is next up on the block. Would that take a similar decant time? I'd give the Smith Woodh...

Re: ‟It's becoming rare to find a wine under 90 points”

Rating systems work for the rater. Sometimes it can be as simple as "buy", "don't buy". It is when one tries to follow a rater's ratings where one can be led astray. As for score inflation, why would wine rating any different to most other attempts to place an ordinal system on a...

I am working until 5pm in Birmingham so I might be as late as 7:30pm. Would this pose a problem? This is shaping up to be my last event :( Heading back to Australia in June. Nice to see it off in style however!

Freshening is the correct option but if you merely want to dilute, water will work. Not sure why one would want to dilute however :)

I assume you are in Australia? Water to merely dilute or young tawny to freshen. Leibich sells some good stuff for the price.

Oh and I forgot to say that the 1998 Dalwhinnie Shiraz is good isn't it? Had it three years ago but I suspect it has improved even further.
