There are actually a couple of Vesuvio's made before 1989. There is a Vesuvio Vintage 1863 (that I have not tasted) and a Vezuvio Vintage 1963 bottled by Ferreira (that I have tasted).

Re: The mystery of the twice born Port house

I don't know about the foundation dates but I think the naming of different bottlers can be explained by the recent change of ownership of of the Delaforce brand. The bottle on the right has a paint mark on it which suggests it spent time in a bin before being labelled. The one on the left was prob...

Re: The mystery of the twice born Port house

An interesting anomaly; perhaps just a printing error by the bottlers/printers when that bottling was done. Checking images in the VPID confirms that all other vintages and bottlings of Delaforce Corte show "since 1868" - the only image I have of the '97 is the one which (apparently erron...

The mystery of the twice born Port house

Could a Port house be born twice? That is actually not the only mystery we have encountered with Delaforce 1997. We bought two bottles of Delaforce Vintage 1997 and noticed some intriguing facts: 1) On one bottle it says "since 1834" and on the other "since 1868" 2) One is produc...

what makes Guimarraens 1976 so dark?

Yesterday we had a Fonseca Guimarraens 1976. It is extremely dark in color and resembles a Vintage 2000 rather than a 70s port. How is this possible? Vintage 1978-79 are totally transparent and tawny or even yellowish in color while Guimarraens 1976 retains its color. Does anyone know why that is? t...

In addition to the brands you mention, the following houses has consistently been performing quite well:
Gould Campbel
Dow
Martinez
Ferreira
Quarles Harris
Eira Velha
Ware
Smith Woodhouse

I would very much like to come as I will go the BFT. I hope there is still space in the tasting room. I have seven 1955s. In addition to the ones that has been mentioned I can provide a George Thienpont 1955 vintage, or a Tuke Holdsworth.

Exhaustive list of fortified wine?

I'm sure we cannot make an exhaustive list of all fortified wine but perhaps we could do our best to make such a list? I would be very interested in getting your help to make an extensive list. I'll start with a few: 1) Port, Portugal 2) Madeira, Portugal 3) Moscatel de Setúbal, Portugal 4) Sherry, ...

Re: Old white port query

I would guess it is from the 1980s or 1990s. White non vintage is a very basic port. However, in my experience even the basic white ports develop very well and becomes much more attractive after a few years. I did buy a few whites made in the 1950s and 1960s and they still hold up very well.

Re: Taylors 1974 LBV

Are aged tawnies and Colheitas filtered? I have always thought that the sediment was removed naturally by the ageing process in wood. I can understand that young tawny would need filtering though but did not expect a 20 yo to be filtered.

The house is C da Silva (who produce Dalva) so I would agree that it is likely a BOB for Lidl.

Lidador

Does anyone know about Lidador port? I have a 1978 Vintage bottled by Joven Lda and I have seen later bottlings by DWS&G as well as Hutcheson. Was Lidador a separate house before Barros bought it or is it just a brand? As far as I understand Lidador has mainly made Reserve port and some tawny.

Re: Taylors 1974 LBV

Lucky you! It might very well be an excellent bottle of port! However, it has not much value (probably less than GBP 10 after expenses). Most people believe that LBV cannot age well but I know for a fact that they sometimes can. Even though LBV's are made to be perfectly drinkable at release, there ...

Gilbert's 1986

In addition to Sten's posting about Gilbert 1985 I have attached the photo. To the right you have the ordinary Gilbert's 1985. To the left you have what I interpret as a bottle with a label printed Vintage 1985 but the number changed manually to 1986, perhaps changed because of a printing error, or ...
