Re: Cockburn 1957
I think you have all come to a collectively probably accurate opinion of the bottles shown. That said, I would be uncomfortable enough that multiple areas of the wine in question (the odd year, the facsimile label, the matching wax, the bottle itself) that Id likely never purchase it. I'd be happy t...

Re: First bottle of the season
To give a bigger, brawnier buffer to the damp and cold coastal influence, the wife and I pulled out an '07 Porto Rocha. Delivering everything you'd want from a young port to keep you warm and happy.

I like my socks to remain where they are while drinking wine. I find it quite distracting otherwise.

Re: 2000 Les Ormes de Pez
A producer I look to for value and a modern style over the last 2 decades of wines. Somehow, having tried about a dozen vintages, I've missed the 2000. In general, the wines have showed better with more air than I usually assume they'll need, so perhaps this may have benefitted from the same? Sent f...

Re: Quinta do Noval 1931 bottle needed to appear in Decanter
I fear that you are going to struggle. Even the bottle you have photographed appears to be labelled as Noval 1931, not Noval Nacional 1931. I've been lucky enough to drink the Noval Nacional 1931 twice and both times it was from bottles that were unlabelled. I know that Roy Hersh had this twice at ...

IIRC, Andy had an eloquent explanation when the topic came up at a tasting at one point. Perhaps he could share?Glenn E. wrote:The explanation is beyond my capabilities while typing on a phone. The Silval question has a very complicated answer.

Re: Is anything from the '90s worth opening today?
Many of the 1995's are drinking nicely right now while waiting for some of the top producers of the classically declared years to come round. I've had a couple Noval Silvals over the last year, as well as a Fonseca Guimarens and all were drinking very nicely without any crazy decants. '95s are also...

Re: 3-4 value ports for a nice beginner-oriented tasting
Welcome Terry, and glad to see you're already on the right track towards becoming both knowledgable and hooked on this wonderful wine. Derek has already best me to most of what I would tell you, though if you're considering spending around $50 for a Vintage Port of some kind, you may be able to sour...

Re: Your first vintage port(s)
I found out recently that my first port was actually Cockburn's Ruby Reserve at communion most of my youth. I was a fan, but had no clue what we were drinking. All I knew was it was better than the insipid and badly oxidized stuff at the Catholic parish I frequented in my younger youth. Sent from my...

Any of those would be good. I would choose the Fonseca personally, but they're all very good. To further clarify, 1985 Fonseca is always welcome at a tasting. Any tasting. For example, at a typical Port tasting my TN might contain something like, "F85: what all middle-aged Ports aspire to be. ...

A date has been decided already? Am I invited? :-P Yes to both, but only tentatively for the former. I still need to contact the other person who will be bringing bottles in order to confirm that he's available that weekend. At that point I'll make a thread about it on the FTLOP forum. Haha I'm jus...

From afar, it appears that a highly objective, completely scientific "Great 1985 Horizontal" experiment is in order - blind, of course (as we shall be by the end of it). One is scheduled for Sat-Sun, 24-25 Jan, 2015, Sammamish, WA, USA. (Do I get an award for most correctly used commas pe...

Re: The Taylor 1985 Debate
I will say that even though I'm firmly on the F85 side of this debate, it isn't really due to Taylor's style (that extra smidge of heat an spice) not being that which I prefer. I do absolutely love some Taylor wines, I just think this one is a far cry from its F85 cousin. I do agree with PhilW that ...

Re: 1985 Fonseca
But recently T85 has blossomed into an excellent Port, much better than F85 as it currently is. Really, better than Fonseca? This feels like it is beginning to stretch credulity, the last Fonseca 85 I had seemed fine. I shall have to look out for a few of the Taylor. Well, this is encouraging me to...
