Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

Jeff, how can I refuse such a generous offer?

Please do bring over a leg of lamb (unless there are objections from the rest of attendees).

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

No. So that you can laugh at the poeple who profess to know the distinctive attributes of particular shippers and vintages yet cannot tell a Ruby from a Nacional 63 when blindfolded
We already know that folks can't even differentiate white and red wine, much less varieties of vintage port.

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

I love the suggestion that my wife would do anything for the tasting other than allowing it. Whatever is done will be done by us. I vote for non-blind. I don't even know what the point of a blind tasting is. So that we can try to guess what a particular port is? How did we get to eleven? I only have...

Re: New York - Postponed Old & Odd Tasting

Friday sounds good to me. But there has been such a huge outbreak on this forum of sensible statements about when to drink port that I am not sure this is really theportforum.

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

I count two bottles for adoption and three folks coming without a bottle: Subir, Molly and differentdave. My suggestion is that whoever does not adopt a bottle put in $90.00 towards the two Nacionals.

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

I don't see a confirmation that differentdave is attending or a confirmation that someone is adopting the 83 Dow from me.

It would help the planning if these issues could be straightened out.

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

Ooh, those are good prices! I don't know if I will have a chance to go there, as I'm not staying long and am at the mercy of my hosts, but I'd definitely like to try to pick up some of the Ferreira if I can! Eric, that is a great idea as I am going to propose both a 1980 horizontal and a Ferreira v...

6 pm sounds right to me. Any comments?

Anyone who does not have directions to my home, please e-mail me.

P.S. Glad to see that the Transiberian Express is working.

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

It sounds like we are at ten. Is the Transiberian Express functioning (i.e., is Eric coming)?

I haven't seen a post from him in this thread for a while.

Where do we stand on attendees? Specifically, is differentdave coming?

What is happening with adopting the 83 Dow?

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

The bottles up for adoption are the Graham 85 from Julian, one of Sushinorth's bottles, and the Dow 83 from me. I will supply the two bottles of Gould Campbell.

If there is a fourth person, perhaps he/she can contribute a bit towards the two Nacionals, or at least Eric's.

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Melville, Sat 13 Sept ’08

I think we need to establish an agreement about adoption/splitting costs. I count three (possibly four, if differentdave is in--by the way, is he?) folks not bringing a bottle of port (this includes Subir as a dry red is a kind extra but an extra nonetheless). In addition, two of the bottles are muc...

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Melville, Sat 13 Sept ’08

Ten is the most that can be squeezed around my dining room table. Jeff, help me out, who is Ronnie? Julian, can you bring your box of glasses (I promise to freshly wash mine right before the tasting)? I will get the GC 83 and 85 shipped down. If there are any problems, I will let the group know. It ...

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Melville, Sat 13 Sept ’08

With Steph we are definitely eight. If Differentdave joins us, we are nine. So it sounds as if we do need the 1983 Warre or another 83/85 combo.

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Melville, Sat 13 Sept ’08

As long as someone is a port lover (or wants to become better informed) and is good company, I see no gender issues. It sounds as if we have seven attendees: Julian, Jeff, Eric, Jay, Sushinorth, Subir (whom I also met at the LBV tasting and was good company), and Molly (if both Jeff and Julian vouch...

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Melville, Sat 13 Sept ’08

Now that the tasting has returned to NYC, I would like to rejoin. In my cellar at home I only have Dow 83 but could get many other 1983s with a couple of weeks notice. Perhaps I could substitute for Eric on the Dow 83. Otherwise, I would be happy to adopt a bottle. Julian, if my home would meet the ...

I am glad to see that Sean C has most of the 1983s and 1985s. I hope that he can step into my shoes and supply the bulk of the port. The more I have thought about it, the less likely that I would go as far as Melville for a tasting. I certainly would not drive and I don't look forward to a return LI...

Organic chemistry? Do I sense a new career.

I also vote for a weekend day.

Assuming that we choose the ten bottles that Julian suggested and split the bottle costs eight ways, the cost per person would be $100.00 for the port.
