1995 Dow's Quinta do Bomfim Vintage Port

I opened this yesterday and have been sipping on it since. This is a very simple SQVP that has some pecular notes to it. From its very simple light weight palate of strawberries and light plums, fully resolved tannins, and short finish. The one thing that I keep coming back to though, is the palate ...

Derek, I almost got one at auction recently but the bidding when a few $$ to high than what I would pay. What would you score it or what would be the most you would pay to buy a bottle again. I ask so I'll have an idea the next time I run across it. BTW, I'm not on any diet and will be drinking good...

Derek, I'll drink it all, sharing it with friends that will also enjoy it, raise a toast to you in your honor every time, and tell old war-stories about our crazy adventures in Portugal while consuming said Ports. Of course I'll be older then and can embellish the stories all I want...after all you ...

To this day I have not seen a bottle of Colheita on a shelf in a wine store in the UK. No one apart from geeks like us have ever heard of it here and back in the 80's it probably sounded a bit too foreign to be a good marketing description Derek WOW  you guys really don't get Colheita's over...

Although no expert, I do have a cigar on a few occassions a year and I must say the best cigar I've ever had was a Monte Cristo A (if i got the name right). At around 9" or so, it also was the largest cigar I've ever seen. Thanks S.C., my hats off to you for that one 88) Ohh, and it was enjoyed...

Well New years day was the 90 mile bicycle ride at a blistering fast pace. I burned 3,100 calories in less than 4 hours

Tonight is a 10 year tawny Port by Presidential (Dalva to the rest of the world).

I'd also hedge my bet that this was a Colheita. To my knowledge Niepoort was and still is the only one to still do a true Garrafeira since the very early 1900's. Some producers are also of the mind set that all wood aged Ports are best consumed closest to the date of bottling. So that would account ...

I picked Ferreira becuase its one I've not had a lot of, except for their aged tawny's, and I can find them fairly cheaply around me.

Well this is a producer that has reestablished the property in recent years and is looking to make a top notch product since they know putting out a bad product will only hurt them, not help them, at this stage. Their property also sits on the north side of the Douro River, but over the hill, so the...

Here's another producer, Quinta do Portal, that is speaking quite highly of the 2007 vintage. The agriculturist Miguel Sousa (Quinta do Portal) says in his harvest report: "The 2007 harvest was later than usual due to the delay in the vegetative cicle of the vines, more evident in the white var...

A solid Port and one have had several times over the years. It was always a very good value and drank really well young as the tannins and acidity were not as harsh, of course that is what it was designed for. I agree that it has seemed to hit a slight closed down phase, although a little later than...

Pipa's are topped off to keep them full. Evaporation rates vary depending on the humidity, temp, and how well sealed the barrel is. The less that is in the barrel means there is more surface area exposed to oxygen. So its would be like decanting your port and drinking it over months and months (to u...

Whenever you make it to Portugal and into a producers cellars, pay particular attention to the markings on the barrels. Despite the standard size, they range in capacity quite a bit. I've seen up to almost 600 liters and as low as about 510 for a standard pipa.

Tom,

I've had the 1962 Noval Crusted once and, while its no stunner and its best years are behind it, it was still a tasty bottle and proof that even the "Poor mans Port" can hold up to some long term bottle aging.

I typically have about 1-2 bottles a week, unless there is an offline or friends over, where many more are opened.
