Re: October 2011 - A Diagonal Repeated

I remain interested, but unless I can somehow pull off trips three years in a row (I'm already planning 2010 and 2012) there's a good chance that I won't be able to make this tasting in 2011.

But there may be a queue of Americans at the door of the Crusting Pipe for this one who had their name down for the diagonal  Me, for one. :P I haven't made any travel arrangements for the 2010 Harvest Tour yet, though, so could skip the UK portion of the after-trip if I'm not part of this ta...

Re: Port in Paris

‟854: 6×G70 @ €500” is €500+bp ≈ €620 ≈ $950 per lot or almost $160 per bottle. That’s not auction bargain. Oh right, forgot the buyer's premium. $125 per bottle is a good price for a G70 (in the US)... $160 is not. Low-end retail for G70 is about $150 in the US right now. I don't assume that auct...

Re: Port in Paris

Some of those prices aren't too bad, assuming you've listed the lot price and not a per bottle price. Lot 854 seems reasonable (by US standards) for 6 x G70, for example.

I'm jealous that you're able to be there! I doubt I'd buy, but it would sure be fun to watch in person.

Re: 1985 Dow's Vintage Port

Interesting... I've always thought that the 1985 Dow was one of the better balanced Ports of the vintage. It is neither the Fonseca nor the Graham, but it has always been nicely balanced and well integrated.

So which is it, have I been lucky or were you unlucky with this bottle?

1 x Warre's Otima 20-yr Old Tawny Port (outrageous price at $44, but I really wanted to try it) 12 x 1985 Churchill's Vintage Port (to be this winter's house Port, minus one bottle for my 1985 horizontal) 1 x 1985 Hooper's Vintage Port (bringing me to 20 bottles in the horizontal) I got the Churchil...

I now have a +1 for the tasting. A friend of ours is going to come with us to NYC. He's one of my converts that I've been working on, and I think he'll enjoy a real tasting.

Re: Which three 1985s should be opened for Sunday lunch?

1. Churchill 2. Martinez 3. Ramos Pinto The Graham, like the Fonseca, is for experts. The Churchill would be as well except that you have two and can afford to treat your guests to something special. I wouldn't serve the Souza or Royal Oporto, because you want to serve something good just in case th...

Re: Which would you rather have?

I'd get the 1977 Taylor... it's a fantastic Port. I haven't been all that impressed by the VVVs that I have tasted. They're very good, but I have yet to taste one that surpasses the same-year Taylor.

Bah, that sucks.

I still haven't found a '63 Sandeman for a good price. There seem to be a few floating around, but I'm not sure I want to pay $250 for one. There's a cheap one at Wine Consigners, but I'm not sure I trust bottles from them so I'll keep looking!

Re: Food and Port

A stunning recipe for the Port-loving man at home alone, as DRT is this evening... 1. Go out and buy 1kg of top quality Ribeye steak. 2. Decant a bottle of Quinta da Eira Velha 2000. 3. Wait 3 hours. 4. Flash-fry 0.5kg of steak, applying liberal quantities of ground balck pepper as it cooks. 5. Pou...

Re: Home Brew!!

I grant you that a gallon a night for five nights is not that excessive. Americans - our pints are bigger than yours, our are 20 fluid ounces each, so to you, fifty pints. As Julian explained to me, your pints are 20 British fluid ounces which are not as large as American fluid ounces. One American...

Hmm... they mark the "up" side of the bottle with whitewash, why couldn't they brand the top of the cork as well to avoid this problem?

Re: 1977 Vintage port - help

Welcome to :tpf: Helen! I think that KillerB has summarized it for you very nicely. If I were you I would look for a Fonseca or a Taylor, because if you can find one of those in your price range they are the very best that the vintage has to offer. You will need some luck, though. Failing that, I wo...
