I'll say; the allusion only came to mind because I was drinking with the son of a member of 617 tonight..

Re: 1983-1985 Double Horizontal on Tuesday 2 April 2013

I am quite exhilarated. Is it always this exciting in the quiet hours before a tasting? Was it like this at Scampton before 617 Squadron went out..? Exactly the same. Chocks away! Scramble, scramble, scramble! My secret mentor has rightly pointed out that I have taken off before leaving the hanger ...

Douro in Sept for the harvest

Is September a bad or a good time to visit the Douro? Are the quintas generally trying to fend off visitors or is there a lot that can be enjoyed? Any recommendations? I'll be seeing some of you on Tuesday so we could have a chat then maybe.

Re: 1983-1985 Double Horizontal on Tuesday 2 April 2013

We have an international Warre crisis. In the spirit of helpfulness.. at a time of crisis... Davy's list W85 as one of the wines they sell from stock. Would it be easy enough to purchase a bottle from them, and ask them to have it decanted for us? Or does that miss the point...? Perhaps, since I wa...

Re: 1970 Da Silva port

Dublin, currently I wonder whether (for instance) Mitchell & Son, or a similar dealer (there are very few who deal vintage port, as opposed to basic rubies and so on) might take one case off your hands. Seems the recent reviews mostly say that this wine could be past its peak. Berry Bros don't ...

I would love a bottle of Kopke Colheita 1984 (€45) - and could then swap you for one of the F83/D83 pair which I will be bringing. No worries if this doesn't work for you, just a thought in case. Very sorry to say that all the 1984 Kopke has sold out! And I never thought to ask if you had a second ...

Re: Warre LBVs, Re-scheduled

You are confused. less unusual than you may think.. The Warre LBVs were set for April, but have been moved to happen possible once, possibly twice, one of which might be September(ish). got it. There is still to be a tasting on 23rd April, but of ‘ The Dirty Dozen ’, being two sets of blind bottles...

I think Orange cleaner may only be available in the US. 1977 Graham

Have heard some strange and quite contradictory things about this so was curious.. Decanted about 6-12 hours, drunk on the evening of Monday 18th March with friends at home. Tawny to very pale ruby colour, 60-70% opaque. Quite light bodied to the eye, not very leggy. Clear on the rim. Aroma: Leather...

That's a nice way of putting it. Their case of 6 is only £30 less than most dealers' case of 12. You live and learn. Or live, at any rate. :)

1985 Fonseca

One of three bought from James Nicholson in Northern Ireland. On the first night, two hours after decanting, quite tight and thin. Very nearly opaque, strong dark ruby. Leggy. Pears and alcohol on the nose, and oak. Little fruit. Smooth to taste, some heat. Sweet, spiced: cinnamon lozenges. Light: n...
