Re: 21st June 2010, horizontal of 1982

I do recall that Caroline had a particular fondness for the Delaforce. She and I seemed to be passing that bottle between us quite often.

Re: Wishlist

Not sure if anyone started a "wishlist" thread before? With the entire community on :tpf: I am pretty sure that individuals might have a bottle that to them does not seem special yet it might be for others. In my example, I've been looking a while for a vintage from 1981 since this is my ...

Re: 21st June 2010, horizontal of 1982

I was a little nervous at the suggested theme before the event, having drunk very little from this vintage and having a preconception that the vintage is on a par with 1975. However, having tasted the 8 or so wines we had available, I am really pleased that Wolfgang suggested the theme and that he a...

Re: TPF hosts Oscar Quevedo

He's due in Seattle next, and then he'll be off to LA. I'm probably crazy, but I'm actually going to drive down to LA. (That's 19 hours at 62 mph for you Euros, or slightly farther than driving from London to Naples, Italy.) Presumably that's the average worked out from 8 hours at 145mph to travel ...

Re: Offline in London - 15 July 2010

We have a quorum. The venue is The Crusting Pipe (I'll make a booking at some point) on Thursday 15 July at 6:30pm. Since it is a Thursday, we will probably not be able to eat off the Sun-Wed special price menu but will end up paying an extra £10 or so per person for the full price menu, so allow £5...

Re: 1982 Royal Oporto

A new thread, smartly added by JDAW while I was posting my first impression of the Niepoort. Thank you. D+25 minutes. A light red colour, deeper than the Df but not as deep as the Ni. Unpleasant bottle stink on the nose, very elastic band. Lovely texture, very smooth but also quite acidic on the ton...

Re: 1982 Niepoort

D+30 minutes. A nice red core, with the depth and tone that would be expected from a mature vintage port. Lovely nose, full of sweet cranberry and redcurrant and a hint of dustiness. Very sweet entry, full of ripe red fruit and the surprise of the package—the soft tannins that make an appearance. Lo...

Re: 1982 Delaforce

D +30 minutes: a very pale pink; nosing of not much, perhaps a bit of Turkish Delight and charcoal. Very sweet in the mouth with some pleasant, figgy fruit. A surprising amount of tobacco spiciness and complexity on the palate of this port and with a good balance of structural acidity. Very floral a...

Re: 21st June 2010, horizontal of 1982

Looking at the Df, Ni and RO the Df is a pale burgundy colour, the Ni is a very promising deep mahogany and the RO is a surprising mature red - the sort of colour I would expect a mature port to be.

Re: June Offline 21th June- Crusting pipe- 1982 horicontal

As I sit here admiring this beautiful array of fine vintage ports in front of me (RO, Df, Ni) I do find myself wondering whether Cruz released a vintage in 1982.

Re: June Offline 21th June- Crusting pipe- 1982 horicontal

Niepoort and Delaforce now decanted. There is also a stray bottle of Royal Oporto 1982 at TCP, but unless told otherwise I will assume that this is NOT to be decanted but is instead to be given to Derek when we next see him. Mystery solved. The box in which the RO was delivered was not given to me,...

Re: Autumn / Winter Spectacular

Roy has given me his dates for his visit to the UK in early October and I will start to organise the 55@55 tasting just as soon as I have finished working out how my cellar will change over the next 25 years as I drnk from it and the wines I don't drink mature another year - damn you Uncle Tom, you ...

Re: Roll of honour?

This is a subject which is quite close to my heart and one which - if I had the time, which I don't at the moment - I would actively collect data. As it is, I have been recording bottles which I open which were bottled in the UK and have been noting which wines have been bottled by which UK merchant...

Re: Different bottles for Fonseca 1970?

I don't have many F70 bottles at home, but from what I remember, I have seen real mixture of glass for the bottlings ranging from black glass through to very pale green. Many of these are probably UK bottled as they did not carry sellos but there was no indication of this on the label. Perhaps this ...

Re: Age profile of my port

So Alex, if you have the same profile for drinking centenarian bottles as me (but doubling the quantity..) I reckon that you need a total of 1324 17yr + bottles, of which 500 need to be over 40yrs old, and 100 of them over 80yrs old. Tom I can't argue with the maths - but I never said that I had th...

Re: Age profile of my port

Thanks for the data. These sorts of snapshots are interesting, but will understate the amount of older wines you buy, as these are the bottles you actually drink over time. So, while only 8% of your cellar may currently be comprised of 1980-1989 VP, that decade might represent ~25% of your port pur...

15 July 2010 - Blind Tasting of 1970 vintage port

Do we have a London offline planned yet for July? I know it's getting a bit hot for port by then, but I'd be interested. If we can find a date that works, would anyone else be interested?

2004 Quinta de Romaneira I actually know very little about this house, but when I read AHB's note and saw the price ($20), I jumped on six as cellar defenders. Thank you AHB and TPF for helping me score what should be an excellent value. Purple and opaque. Very open blueberry nose. Sweet and fruity...

Age profile of my port

Every now and then, usually when I can't drink from my cellar for some reason, I like to look at some of the statistics for the bottles that I have to enjoy in the future. This time, I was curious to know what sort of age profile the bottles had since I have in mind that I am trying to buy port from...
