Re: Festive Drinking 2022

Nuits St Georges Les Damodes 2015. Domaine Fabienne Bony. Crushed black cherry nose. Congruent palate before the earth appears and then the tannins. Young enough still to drink on the fruit and a great and contemplative pleasure to do so especially with the second glass, Brendel spielt Mozart on the...

Re: Festive Drinking 2022

Spice Route Quevri Orange Wine 2020 as a pre prandial before lunch today. Very pleasant probably chenin blanc orange wine but nothing in it that intrinsically tells you which continent it was from let alone vintage country or region. Big contrast: with the pheasant a bottle of Hermitage La Chapelle ...

Re: Festive Drinking 2022

Tonight, Michel Gonet Grand Cru Le Mesnil Blanc de Blanc 2011 zero dosage en demi. Golden, nutty on the nose but still sprightly and chalky on the palate with only the more gentle mousse revealing the age. To come Caronnne St Gemme 2016 with the beef soup and then Thymiopoulos Rose de Xinamavro 2013...

Re: Festive Drinking 2022

Late supper last night after a concert at the Wigmore Hall. Beajolais Villages 2016 from Maison en Belle Lies 2016. Delicious cool gamay fruit, little hint of natural funk, utterly quaffable with a sandwich of cold roast rib of beef.

Re: Festive Drinking 2022

While we can be certain that Neil, Alex, Harry, and Clifford's lunch is going to win the thread, I had some of my team round for dinner last night to meet a new hire. We consumed the following. Champagne Nathalie Palmet Brut NV - pinot noir dominated quaffable fizz Henri Giraud Coteaux Champenois Ay...

Tom, may I add my sincere thanks to those of others, it was a splendid occasion, and your Tuke Holdsworth 1922 was a worthy runaway winner: a fine tribute to your father.

NV Wine Society Crusted 2013

NV Wine Society Crusted Bottled 2013 90 per cent opaque purple-rimmed port. Even when consumed in a cold house the nose full of cool blue-fruited vif. Full rich palate of black grapes with chocolate. I would say this has come on a touch since my last note 18 months ago. Delicious port. A fine cold-...

NV Quinta do Mourao Tawny 30YO (S. Leonardo) (bottled 2022)

NV Sao Leonardo 30 YO Bottled 2022

20 per cent ABV

A rich mahogany.

Nose of granny's handbag, mi-cuit prunes, and hazelnut oil.

Sweet palate on entry, then hazelnuts and plum fool.

Finishes very sweet.

Attractive but not absolutely compelling.

2009 Sao Leonardo 1 hr decant 95 per cent opaque red juice Typical licorice and prune nose profile of Portuguese houses' vintage port Really remarkably smooth palate majoring on the pruneaux fourees d'agen with some black currant overtones (rather than the reverse which is what you might otherwise ...

@ Alex - Another vote for chalk pens and tasting sheets.

@ Tom - if it's not an imposition pease could I start with just a green salad? I didn't do sufficient justice to my massive fillet steak last year.

At some point winebid is going to come in and eat their lunch, so they are just making hay while the sun shines. I reckon Strakers, Bonhams Sothebys and Christies will survive but the rest will be toast.

It's just that 1970 ports seem smaller because they are so delicious...

That said there is elsewhere on this site reference to a wine society explanation of how much of their UK bottling was done in 72 and 73 cl back in the 70s

+68 hours With samples taken at daily intervals, this has presented a rather different character on each occasion tasted. 2000 Quinta do Mourao (S. Leonardo)

2000 Sao Leonardo P'n'd'n'p Very heavy sediment A full deep rose at the rim, 70 per cent opaque. Nose is bright with violet and grape, reminiscent of the Warre of the same vintage. At the moment the trains still seem to be running on Thursday 15th, including the 2244 back to town (which arrives just before midnight). Getting that continues to be my current plan.
