They have it at Trader Joe's, eh? I'll have to stop by one and see what I can find. (This has been a very naughty port week, i'm up by 14 bottles and it's not over yet!)

OK, this was a useful post, next bottle I open i'm spreading across some of those glasses (and maybe a riedel) and comparing. I may have been too harsh on the establishment.

Ha, yeah, I organized my brother's bachelor party and we went out to a fine Strip steak House in NYC. He's also into Port, but when I saw the prices they had on plonk, I plotzed! We spent $80 on what should have been a $20 bottle of average red, then went somewhere cheaper for drinks.

Sadly, I doubt I will be able to break free that week -- but have fun in NY. Let us know if you need suggestions.

Glasses, continued

So I was thinking more about the glasses thread, and thought perhaps I'd see where people stood on the glass preference (for Port). I started with a selection from my cabinet of some unadorned representatives of different sizes/shapes. I haven't any stemless Riedel, but I've added it to the poll for...

I have a number of official Port glasses (and some "Cognac" glasses of identical shape), however I actually prefer a medium-sized brandy snifter. Perhaps that's blasphemy, but I enjoy the big nose of port (having one myself) and the color around the edge is more apparent with the broad bot...

I'm so happy you posted this -- as vintage 74 myself, I picked up a Noval Col 74 in Lisbon but had only seen poor scores for it. This gives me hope; I wonder what another 17 years will do for it...

Or perhaps, more that they were those two particular initials ;)

Lol, yes, SW/SWC, I always think of it as Smith & the Woodhouses, (thus S & W), but you're right -- no & in the name.
And as for initials, JS. Is it set for the 29th?

Why North

The Sushi part is that I was heavily blogging sushi restaurant reviews, but as I live in Ossining (about 40 mins north of Manhattan), it was all "North of NYC" type places. I'd be happy to orchestrate a Sake tasting. In the past I've held them up here and in NJ, but i'm switching over to n...

What timing

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to plan a late march party for friends as an excuse to open a 77. I don't have any of the bottles on your "needs" list, though I've some 77 S&W and a 77 Warres. Oh, and Hi -- I'm new and in the NY area (and also start with a J -- see Intros).

Josh, NY

Hello, I've been lurking in the reviews for a while, but figured it was time to join the community. I'm another J in the NY area, and very much the foodie. I focus on several areas: Port, Sake, Sushi, Cheese, Brandy, and Rieslings (in that order). I run a blog on the topic over here , mostly the jap...
