Re: Thu 15 December 2022 - The Port Forum's 15th Xmas Tasting

I was also coming by rail, and can only come by rail as I have to be somewhere else early the following morning. I shall have a last despairing check of timetables over the weekend before resigning my place.

Re: 2001 Taylor Terra Feita

+22 hours. 90% opaque. Nose has calmed down to touriga-nacional-focussed quite cool violet-scented wine. Congruent, and very attractive palate. The Taylor heat has gone - which is a good thing. Blackcurrant pastilles on the finish. Very enjoyable port, and even more my sort of thing than it was yest...

2001 Taylor Terra Feita

Double decanted one hour Lots of white pepper on nose. Lots. Exuberant violet fruit behind that. A bit thin on mouth entry then some blackcurrant pate de fruits. Then a little Taylor heat. Nice long finish gently fading away through cranberry and star anise to cinnamon-accented mulled wine. This ver...

I am more positive about it than JacobH. I think it is better than anyone else's 20yo and about the same price.

That sounds truly splendid. A testament to the best practice being to drink colheitas, like TWAIOAs, soon after bottling?

+20 hours

A touch more cranberry on the palate. Drying out a bit. Finish still somewhat shorter than perfection. Nice port, but it was more exciting last night.

Re: 2001 Warre Quinta da Cavadinha

A deep red, 80 per cent opaque. Grapes and violets on the nose. Lovely lush mouthfeel. Palate, again, grapes and violets. The finish, with a hint of chocolate violet creams, is slightly shorter than perfection, but still jolly nice. This is lovely wine, possibly at peak in bottle format. Magnums wil...

2001 Warre Cavadinha

Just wanted to record an incidence of exploding-cork-on-withdrawal syndrome on the above. The port has now been multiply decanted and awaits sampling later.

this is genuinely pleasant wine now, the heat having faded. But I would struggle to describe it as port.

1975 Croft

Popped and decanted and double decanted and poured. Good cork came out clean. Excellent level. Perhaps 40 per cent opaque, a rather pretty light garnet fading to yellow at the rim. Rose hip tea on nose. Some orange and nutmeg behind that. Some tea rose. Light sweet mouthfeel. Fairly indeterminate su...

Re: Non Festive Drinking

Eponyme 2015 is a vanishingly rare (120 magnums for the world) Bourgogne made by Domaine De La Roseraie in Nolay. It's actually 100 per cent Beaune but because it contains 10 per cent white wine it's outside the rules hence the generic (and the defiant name). It's utterly gorgeous serious-yet-joyful...

Re: Wed 2nd November 2022 - Taylor Terra Feita vertical and friends

I second Phil's analysis that (my paraphrase) Vargellas provides the backbone and heat and Terra Feita provides the lush fruit. I also think that I would prefer Taylor's full vintage, in any vintage from the 80s or 90s, to any of these - the much-vaunted TV87 included (although the 1983 only slightl...

2008 Taylor Terra Feita

Very dark indeed. Very dry. Very good. Long lived? Not sure. But, very good now and over the next five to ten years.

Consumed 1800-2100 on 02/11/22, decanted 0900 that morning.

Young porty nose. A bit tart on the palate. Not lovely. Happily, some people liked it.

Maturing red. Very promising nose. Nice rounded palate. Cherry bakewell tart. Got a point from me and a deserved 4th in the WOTN.

Real breed on the nose. Fully mature genuine port wine. Good condition. For me this wiped the floor with the Terra Feita, but the room disagreed.

Orange rim. Smells a bit rubbery. A bit odd on the palate. Redolent of oranges. Not a perfect bottle, we think. Coffee.

Pale rim. A bit of turps on the nose. Hints of tea rose. Doesn't have any great length. Attractive but not as good as the 1982.

Consumed 1800-2100 on 02/11/22, decanted 0900 that morning.
