Re: Is this Fonseca (Guimaraens) 1947?

Earlier this evening went to check the bottles. I decided to take them, they look in pretty good shape (all three have levels in the upper shoulder of the bottles, no signs of leakage). The capsules mention (as far as I can read): shipped solely by Guimaraens & Co Porto. I've not seen this stat...

Re: Is this Fonseca (Guimaraens) 1947?

Fonseca have some quite good information about the history of the firm on their website: link While the "producer" or "house" that we now refer to as Fonseca Guimaraens seems to have existed in a number of legal forms (both corporate and partnership) in UK and Oporto over the yea...

Re: Crusted port database

Of course there might be exceptions, but this is the default. Yes - it was just that that particular listing, in contrast to some of the other auction listings, did not specify that this was the bottling date (and Andy's subsequent reference to "Port of this year" gave me pause for though...

Re: General query on maturity in half bottles

And could introducing Oporto-stored halves into this mix risk fouling the water somewhat, since they'd possibly be even more advanced than English-cellared? Personally I don't think that the results will count for much unless they are all oporto-cellared and from one of the recent ex-cellars releas...

Re: Start a vintage collection

I'd like to jump on this wagon by asking a not-entirely unrelated question: having only gone as far back as 1985 in my forays into vintage port, which vintages, and indeed, port houses, are especially prone to TCA and make any purchases of such a port to be too risky? I've heard a lot of '77s are q...

Re: Start a vintage collection

The Ch85 seems especially good value given that it showed better that both the T85 and F85 at a tasting we had when Glenn was over last year. Forgot that. Yes, very true. Also agree with all Rob (RAYC) says. I notice on FTLOP some people recommended Fonseca 85 maybe. I think this is a nice idea but...

Re: Start a vintage collection

Looks like a nice collection, perhaps a bit overweight on 83s (unless you were born in 1983) - personally i think you would have more fun re-allocating part of that budget to 1970! Gould Campbell 77 is often a great port but be prepared (especially, it seems, if purchasing in single bottles) for a h...

Re: Most evolved halves - G90 or W87 ?

Don't most storage facilities offer single bottle withdrawals nowadays? Possibly, but Seckfords seem to avoid holding bottles that are not part of a 9l case / half case unit (unless shipped in bond eg: as a 3-pack / single bottle / large format) - i seem to recall this was something to do with thei...

Re: Most evolved halves - G90 or W87 ?

If at seckfords, they may well allow you to do a 6 + 6 split (I have a number of 3-bottle cases in storage there, so it is a volume they recognise). Have not had Cavadinha 87, but re-reading my old note on a half bottle of GM90 from June 2013 (which is likely to be from the same Symington shipment a...

I've always preferred viewing the full site on mobile browser rather than using tapatalk.

However, I do find it frustrating that I frequently receive the pop-up message suggesting that I visit apple store for the tapatalk app. Anyone know how to turn that off?

Re: Summarise a vintage, concisely

Graham 83 is a serious candidate for port of the 80s, in my view. Ramos Pinto, Niepoort and Warre 83 have all been drinking very nicely over past couple of years. Gould Campbell shows good promise. I had my doubts about this vintage for some time, but now I think it no better or worse than 80 or 85....

Re: 20Y Sandeman tawny

When were your respective bottles opened? [edit: I meant when were they "bottled"] I recently had a 2011 bottling from an old order we put in with the UK distributors just before a 2013 bottling freshly purchased from Waitrose, and the extra couple of years in bottle had (to my taste) been...
