Re: Christmas port choice

Either would work. Both would be better. I know, I know, I really should try harder. But since my wife became teetotal 1 bottle seems to be about all I get through over the course of a few days. Undoubtedly there are TPF members who would be delighted to assist you in ensuring your port doesn't lan...

Re: A reason to get up early

Of course, growing up in Nebraska was hardly better. Poor soul. I have known several people with a similar traumatic experience, and they never really seem to fully recover. Truly heart-wrenching. That being said, I have little doubt that port eases the pain, and am certain that many here will conc...

Lion Nathan? I feel dubious about advice from a man whose name is an Australian spin bowler back to front. Now, now. The Aussies have contributed much to the world of science and literature I am told, and one day - possibly this decade - one of us will think of one example (as I sit surrounded by A...

Good answer, I have come through the 'what have you got there?' 'nothing darling' phase of my relationship. But I do hanker for cases. Proper cases with twelve good men and true in them. I hear you. I also lust after these things. Possibly, "But, don't you want me to be happy?" Although t...

1970 Graham

Popped this for a friend born in the same year. Oporto bottled, good fill level, with a relatively short cork. Decanted just before noon, consumed around 9pm. About 40% opaque with a little bricking around the edges, and long legs. A little VA on the nose, but mercifully not much. Very, very smooth ...

I have every intention of attending, but it may well be in a Jeremy Bentham fashion. Surely you can also make it. Afterward, the skeleton and head were preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet called the "Auto-icon", with the skeleton padded out with hay and dressed in Bentham's clothes. ...

Who was the Hollywood star that helped develop an anti-jamming system for torpedo guidance systems during WWII, although it was not finally deployed by the US military until much later? The star and co-developer applied for and received the patent during the war.

Re: Oldest bottles

The oldest port was 1950 Cockburn - very difficult to recommend. The oldest madeira was an 1815 - which was very, very good - although I think the 1863 solera to be possibly the most enjoyable drink I have ever had - still have one bottle left, and am waiting for some special occasion to drink it. My daughter - who prefers younger port - and I popped one of these over the weekend. Only decanted a couple of hours, opaque, nose of cherries, slightly hot on the entry, lots and lots of fruit (figs? raisins?), but still closed, and with only modest length. Am very glad that I have more, but it def...

Having only tasted a couple so far - am thinking about getting some Vesuvio. I have the 1994s, which might be ready in my lifetime - just, but would be interested in everyone's opinion regarding which of the other vintages they rate most highly - as well as how they compare to the 1994.

Completely agree. Was very, very cheap - and pleasant, and long since consumed. That being said, given roughly similar pricing now (at FRW), I think I would buy the 1994 Graham instead.

Re: Why do wines shut down

I think AHB's explanation is an excellent one - and we should remember that 'shutting down' is a subjective perception. Maybe we can judge this better as a continuum in the way Alex suggests. Different compounds precipitating in different ratios at different stages, producing many contrasting stage...
