Australian producers will also be allowed to continue using quality terms such as cream, ruby, tawny and vintage for wines exported to the EU.

The protected European names also include burgundy, port, amontillado, claret and Auslese.
I suppose it will be interesting to see what word is chosen to replace ‟port”, especially as they will still be able to use a large number of Port-related terms...
(On an unrelated issue, one thing I don’t understand why Australian Tokay will no longer be able to be sold as such. I thought it was a reputable style of wine in its own right and clearly distinct from Tokaji.)

My understanding, which may very well be inaccurate, is that Tokay is how Aussies spell Tokaji after they mis-pronounce it. Much like they use "Shiraz" for Syrah.
I seem to remember this happening about 4 years ago!!
Did I dream it or does anyone else remember the use of the word Port being banned in Auzland? If you go to your local sainsbury you will see bottles of Leemans Auzlan fortified red wine with a little paper sticker with Tawny written on it hiding the word Port underneath on the original label. They have been on the shelf like that for about 3 years!

I wonder if this time the word is being banned in Australia whereas last time it was just banned in the UK or EU (hence the stickers). We shall see in 2012! (When perhaps we should have a commemorative tasting!)
