Royal Oporto 10 year old rich tawny advice

Post by steviej »

I was given a bottle of Royal Oporto 10 year old rich tawny, I guess around 12 years ago, and would be grateful if someone could shed some light on its age, if it's likely to be worth drinking or for 'cooking use only'. After having looked around a little it appears that Royal Oporto isn't held in any great esteem? I'm guessing that it's pre Portugal joining the euro as it has Pte on the back, price?, which would indicate the escudo, and they joined in 1999. Any info would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to :tpf:

This could still be drinkable. It has no financial value so it is probably best to just open it at Christmas and see what happens. If the wine is still bright and clear it will probably be ok. If it has been "cooked" at some point in its history it will look brown and murky and should be consigned to the kitchen.

Good luck

Hi,

Thanks very much for the advice, fingers crossed that it is palatable. Would you have any idea when it would have been

produced / bottled out of curiosity ?

Cheers.

Hi Stevie, welcome to TPF :)
The bottling date is on the front label, in red at the bottom right of the central white rectangle, though I can't quite read it on the image you've posted. It will have been created as a blend of wines aged in barrel for at least 7 years at that time.

And considering the first two numbers appear to be "19.." this has been in bottle for at least 16 years. A mighty long time for a 10 year tawny.

Probably still drinkable if stored well, but it was not very good to begin with. I'm sure you can sort out the rest...

You can't leave us in such suspense!

Can you read the bottling date on the front label (as described by PhilW above) and let us know what it says please?

I'm guessing 1996

The last number on a barcode is a check digit if it is following EAN guidelines. So product ref would probably be 199. :663333:
