Sandeman 1942 - another question...

Post by nac »

From a different source to the Warre 1963 I've asked about, recently obtained three bottles of Sandeman 1942.

There isn't a tasting note on TPF, and I can't find anything recent elsewhere. Does anybody know anything about this wine?

1942 was a very good but very small vintage. No-one was available to work the vineyards so very little was bottled. There isn’t a tasting note since I don’t think any of us have tasted it! That’s definitely a bottle that other Port lovers would very much like to share with you (and, I’m sure, would bring something appropriate to share in return).

I know I would!
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

From the same source, also acquired a stock of Ferreira 45, Tuke Holdsworth 47, Mackenzie 48, Boa Vista 50 and Delaforce 58. Given they're all quite rare I might arrange a tasting in early 2019 if there's sufficient interest...

Venue would probably be 67 Pall Mall.

I’d definitely be up for a tasting and could contribute a bottle or two of equally rare or unusual port.

And I’ve wanted to visit 67 Pall Mall for a while, so that would be a great choice of venue.

Sounds like an excellent idea for a tasting to me; the Sandeman '42 is particularly unusual and interesting.

That's a great bundle of ports nac! I've also got a Tuke Holdsworth '47 waiting for a good reason to be opened - would be happy to stand it next to yours if the opportunity presents itself. I've only been to 67 Pall Mall once and very much enjoyed it.

That sounds like a wonderful tasting and I might bring my 1935 "Pall-Mall" Vintage. My Vintage 1935 "Pall-Mall" is probably a buyers brand. I have some indications that it might be connected to C. da Silva though. Anyhow, I can't see any better place to drink this bottle than at Pall Mall.

A Graham '42 won wine of the night at a Graham vertical tasting back in November 2012 - I haven't opened one since, and have still got three bottles left from that stash..

Came via a "special" Corney & Barrow offer. They were from the estate of a client who had passed away.

In theory all of the bottles were below the standard C&B would normally sell - ie, low levels, seepage, etc - and the pricing reflected this. For example, £12 for the Sandeman 42, £24 for the Mackenzie 48, £18 for the Delaforce 58.

So far I've opened Delaforce 47, Ferreira 45, Mackenzie 48, Offley Boa Vista 50 and a Delaforce 58. In each case they've been the worst examples I've got (some around low-shoulder) and all have been at least pretty good. Most of the bottles are in significantly better condition.

Apparently they'd been in the cellar for years, unmoved, with pretty much perfect conditions. I suspect some of the bottles with lower levels may have leaked when they were moved...

Lunch today with the Mackenzie 48 & Delaforce 58.
I thought both were very good, but popular vote was for the Delaforce. M very medicinal.
Both bottles around base of neck, so pretty good for age.
