Tasting notes:

Niepoort Vintage 2017

Julian: Red purple, as opaque as young Port. Nose dominated by red grape, with prune and plum. Also something exotic. I thought pineapple, but not quite that. Palate is sweet and approachable, large but not gigantic, deliciously balanced. And stuffed hard with raspberry jam – dense with it, deliciously so. I could drink this with toast. Or by itself. And very very long. Five minutes later something else arrived, so I drank water. This had impressive length. With more time in glass, very different. Tannins now bigger, raspberry still there but less dominant. Still great balance and great length. Also a hint of tank showing, but that will disperse soon enough.

Alex: Deep purple colour with an opaque centre and a narrow rim. Superb blackcurrant fruit on the nose, very sweet and perfectly ripe with a lovely esteva perfume. A wonderful balance on the entry with the fruit leading, fruit which is ripe and clean with no over-ripeness. Astonishing perfumed tannins on the mid-palate; ripe and fine-grained but astonishingly well integrated into the fruit. A fabulous perfume to the fruit. The aftertaste has a slight chewiness to the fruit, fruit which fades in and out of the finish, lingering for ages and dancing with the gentle green-edged tannins. This is a beautiful wine with a wonderful balance of clean, pure fruit but with powerful tannins. The purity and elegance of the wine is amazing - and makes this very special. 94-96 points.

Niepoort Vintage 1942

Julian: Orange-brown, 25% opaque. Palate soft and full, large and long. Showing age: hint of orange, but the sweet fruit fruit had faded. Extremely long. Becoming Bridgeman.

Niepoort Vintage 1970 (Dumpy bottle)

Julian:Brick red 25%. Red cherry, smoke – distant cigar – and perfectly soft. A mite of heat mid palate. Sweetness in perfect balance. Still a stunning mature VP, though on the edge of tired.

Niepoort Colheita 1987

Julian: Orange-yellow 15%. Again soft and balanced; crisp acidity showing beautifully. Mid-to-light weight. Very long.

The first message I received on this subject was this morning at 10:16.

The WhatsApp messages are still coming thick and fast from Alex and Julian, but now they are having a blind tasting in a wine bar with Dirk some 8 hours after they started.

Good stamina from the team :GoldStar:

Congratulations on the first reviews of the 2017 Vintage! It’s always great to see the early reviews before group think potentially sets in.

I assume that 96 half bottles to my Seckfords account is not the response you are looking for?

You are quite correct. It is not.
