2015 LBV options

Post by rich_n »

I recently noticed that some 2015 LBVs are now gracing some supermarket shelves. Given 2015 was a rather good year for port wines, does anyone have any suggestions for specific wines that might be worth acquiring as cellar defenders?

The Sandeman is now available, and showed very well when presented at the BFT last year.

The Sandeman LBV is my go-to LBV; it's easily available and extremely good value for money. If you can find them, I also recommend Quevedo, Offley and Ferreira. Warre and Smith Woodhouse will be held back for 8-10 years to be released with some bottle age — they will be worth seeking out in due course.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

The distribution of Smith Woodhouse LBV in the UK appears to have stopped, it only appears to be distributed in the US now..

Of limited use in a UK context perhaps but I recently picked up a few Offley LBV 2015 from a supermarket in Denmark. Alas, Wine Searcher did not yield any UK results.

Thanks Alex, I'll keep an eye out for these two. I've seen Naked Wines offer Quevedo the last couple of years so it might be available there.

Asda website currently has a Cockburn LBV (no mention of the vintage however) for £10 per bottle (reduced from £13).

A growing, and very annoying habit of the supermarkets is to assume that vintage dates don't matter.

I mostly boycott those doing this..

I certainly have been put off buying online in case they have a different vintage lbv from that they are advertising.

Have taken a punt & placed an order. Being delivered tomorrow evening, so will report back once I know what it is. Although at £10/bottle it's probably a good deal regardless.

Asda van broke down, so didn't deliver & therefore still unable to confirm vintage. Rescheduled for this Wednesday...

Just had notification for delivery this evening. The 6 x Cockburn LBV have been substituted for 3 x Taylor First Estate, so suspect will never know what vintage it was. Will be rejecting the delivery and giving up on this...

I have seen Cockburn 2014 LBV in my local Asda recently, but it was at the £13 price.

What's particularly amusing is that they've also reduced it down to 3 bottles as that's now the maximum number Asda will let you have of any one item. Maybe they're worried about panic buying of Port?

As long as you will always be able to buy at least 3 bottles of port a day each we ‘should’ all be okay.

The only time I've panic bought port is in the M&S £6 for 2007 vintage OL deal last year. Fortunately they were perfectly happy for me to buy as much as I wanted!

Assuming I just drink what's in the cellar at home, then at a rate of one bottle per week I'm OK for about 11 years. Hopefully we'll be back to normal by then.

I've been stockpiling Port for the last 30 years. Now, finally, I can look smug at all you people who can only buy 3 bottles at a time. Who was right all along then?

At one bottle of port a week (of all types), I'm good for nearly 159 years..
