TFP 1994 VP special release for US market

Post by Doggett »

Not sure if this is just for the US market. seems a bit punchy in price even for 100 pointers...

It does appear to be US-only. (For once!) And yes, that's a bit steep for 2 x 375ml even if they are 100-point Ports with perfect provenance. 750ml bottles run about $150 each in the US right now. I'll have to keep an eye out and see if anyone discounts them at all... this does say SRP of $299 so someone will surely discount them a bit.

It's possible I'm a bit jaded, because I have 2 x 1.5L of the Taylor in my cellar that I purchased several years ago. (Possibly as many as 10 years ago... I've lost track of time these days.) As I recall they were $175 each... someone either didn't realize what they had, or they were mis-priced at the 750ml price.

A couple of years ago I was chatting to David Guimaraens as to what cellar remnants the TFP might be interested in disposing of. 'We have far too many half bottles kicking around' - he replied..

Given who they’re signed by these are not a current new release pair of bottles.

The letter in the box says they will be at their best between 2010 and 2040 suggesting these were packaged before 2010.

If not mistaken, around the late 1990’s.

Given this...

Re: Port for sale by retailer - T94 & F94

Offer received yesterday from Fine & Rare (frw.co.uk) for 1994 Taylor and Fonseca. Apparently recently shipped from Oporto. Both are £570 per 6 in bond.

...pricing for two half bottles does feel a tad optimistic.

I wonder what the back story to those half bottle gift packs is?

Not normal to keep bottles in fancy packaging in lodge for an extended period. I've never seen one at auction, so if they were offered before but didn't sell as well as expected, it doesn't seem to have been in the UK.

- Have they been seen before in the US?

The wear / scuff marks on the letter and Taylor label in Axel’s photo suggests they have been stored already assembled, too, which must make preparing them for sale a bit of a nightmare: I wouldn’t be confident that none of them had leaked without checking each bottle individually.

I’m also intrigued that in the late 1990s it was thought worthwhile to have Alistair Robertson sign all 4,000 bottles!

Would be quite up for buying a load of halves of these - at a sensible price.

They will probably have inspected them all before shipping them off to the US, and there is probably a pile of packs left in Gaia that didn't survive the twenty years of storage unscathed.

An offer to buy these, strictly for consumption and not for onward retail, might deliver a favourable price..

Tom,

Do you think that TPF might have a lot more half bottles of different vintages (SQVP's etc.) still hanging around. I'm sure there would be enough interest here to do a deal for a pallet or two?

I wouldn't be surprised if any cosmetically damaged TFP ports are now destined to be sold by the glass in the lodge + restaurant / Yeatman / WoW. It would seem quite an efficient way of recycling them.

There's no harm asking!

Mind you - start totting up the cost before you start talking pallet loads - there's a lot of bottles on a pallet!
