"Dirty Dick"

Post by AHB » 06:28 Thu 19 Jun 2008

There's an historic watering hole on the east side of Liverpool Street station called Dirty Dick. It's been around for donkey's years and has featured in a number of books and pamphlets on the history of pubs in London.

A century ago, it had a reputation for being one of the "go to" places in London if you wanted a pint of port.

Has anyone been there in recent years? I've often walked past and never had the chance to go in and sample their wares. Any ideas whether they offer port and what the choice is like?

I went there about a month ago. It’s a rather disappointing place. The bar is nice enough, but the detritus that gave it its name is long gone, and prices are very much on the high side. Despite numerous signs suggesting otherwise, the only Port on offer was the customary bottle of Cockburn’s Special Reserve behind the bar.

Considering there isn’t exactly a dearth of pubs in the area, I can’t really see myself visiting this one again, though it seems to me to be a prime candidate for a Davy’s takeover!

Thanks for the advice. In future, you can be sure that I will avoid Dirty Dick's.

Seems like a pub with a great history, that has sadly fallen into mediocracy. If Davy's would take over, at least the port selection would improve.

A fine illustration of the advantages of using an apostrophe correctly, as AHB did. Happiness all round.

You will no doubt be surprised but hopefully happy to know that I did spot that as I posted.

I'm glad to see that my attempt at humour was not missed.
