Ramos Pinto 1982 / 1983?

Post by RonnieRoots »

I have the opportunity to let people bring one of these over to me. I've read some (mixed) reviews on the 1983, but none on the 1982. Anyone had one of these recently? Opinions?

Yes, you are obviously right, but are they actually any good? Or should I instruct our guests to keep searching for something different?

They're great if that's all that's available! I haven't had either, but have had a ton of RP 85. I would go for the 83.

Derek is right, you live in a dessert man...just drink

Seriously, I'd go with 83. The 83 is quite decent...never had 82, but it was a very bad year for almost all in the Douro.

The one 1982 I tasted, Noval, was poor. RP85 is delicious, especially for the price — I’ve had lots. RP83 is available, you live in a desert: do the obvious thing.

Had the 83 quite a few times between 98 and 2004 and I always enjoyed it!

Ronald, unfortunately no TN for 1982. But TN for 1983 here: http://www.thewinedoctor.com/portugal/ramospinto.shtml

According to my reserch prices for 1982 and 1983 do not vary very much. Because of the (generally spoken) far better vintage 1983 I would go in doubt for 1983.

Thanks for all the replies! I decided to go for the 1983, should be a pleasant glass of port. With that we will also receive a Taylor (I'm guessing Vargellas) 1996. That should pull us through Ramadan!
