Hi

I'm new to the forum and after reading this post i happen to find myself in Tesco's today and bought 6 bottles of the croft mentioned earlier.

All i can say is very impressed!! while not new to port i have a lot to learn and if this is the sort of advise i can pick up from here then sign me up!!!

This port punches way above its price tag!

Welcome to the forum - and delighted that you are as impressed by the Croft LBV as we are. It's a very good price to quality ratio.

Tesco have stopped the discount on the Croft 2004 in half bottles, but are now selling the Croft 2005 LBV (Unfiltered; bottled 2010) with a 50% discount for £7 per full bottle.

Sadly, Tesco's current "buy 6 bottles and get 25% off" offer does not apply to fortified wines.

This is on port at present not sherry so bag another 25% off available until 7th November £5.25/bottle instead of £14 limit to 12 per online order :D

You need to order via groceries and not via wine by the case hence the limit of 12 bottles

Also Ocado and Waitrose Wines are currently doing 25% discounts on 6 and 12 bottle purchases respectively.

M&S have just started putting their Christmas port on the shelves in Croydon today. Not exactly sure what it is, but appears to be a Fladgate 1994 vintage at £26.99

Is anyone able to confirm whether the 2005 Croft lbv is as good (or nearly as good) as the 2004?

Unfortunately the 1/2 price deal at Tesco ends a couple of days before the "daily drinker" tasting, and the extra 25% off this Sunday, so would be good to know if anyone had already opened one and has initial impressions (though, at £5.25, I suspect you can't go wrong picking up a few!).

I was told that the 25% off for 6 bottles deal excluded fortified wines :crying:

Confirmed on call to Tesco customer services that 25% off also applies to port and sherry (though did not confirm whether it applied to bottles already the subject of a different offer).

Their "wine by the case" site now shows 25% discount as well....

I called them to make sure it was, as stated previously you have to order via the groceries to get the discount instead of the wine by the case - all very confusing if you ask me!

Sorry not had the 2004 so can't comment on that but just had a bottle of the 2005 and it is good very alcoholic but for £5.25 I don't think you can go wrong, I'm sticking at my 12 now 10 bottles (gave one to neighbour to try) as I buckled and bought a case of 70 Warre today, also I think the M&S VP should be on special within the next week or two and for me that will be a good buy.

I really appreciate you posting this. I went into Tesco this morning and again asked the manager if fortified wine was included in the buy 6, get 25% discount offer.

Again, he said no.

So we compromised and I scanned 6 bottles of Croft 2005 LBV and, as if by magic, the 25% discount appeared. I left with these 6 bottles (all they had) and 6 bottles of the Tesco 1994 vintage port. Now all I have to do is to figure out where to keep them for the next few months!

Excellent I'm glad you managed to get some - the 94 is a good call also. It turns a good deal into an outstanding deal happy drinking

Yes last year that went 25% off. I popped into my m&s last night and talking to them they indicated it was a glitch on the tills which took 25% off all wines and spirits. I'll know within the next couple of weeks though as that is when all they Christmas codes come out. It was a beautiful port and I was gutted that I didn't purchase more of it - in saying that though I am not sure I would pay full price as given that Tesco's VP is the same year and is on special offer at the moment I don't think it justifies the 100% extra price tag. I'll keep you posted as to any discounts that come up.

JUST GOT A PRIVATE OFFER (i.e., NO VAT) FOR 1 CASE of 1970 TAYLOR FOR 1,200.

I'd only be interested in a bottle or two (as my house is already overflowing with bottles). Anyone interested in the rest?

Dollars or pounds?

UK or US?

(Yes, I'm interested, but really only if it's a US-based deal. Shipping to the US from the UK is ridiculously expensive.)

GBP 1200 for a case of Taylor 1970 is more than I have been paying recently (£71-88 inc. VAT). The provenance would have to be exceptional to make it worth that much. Any idea of the provenance?
