Herman Gerdingh

Herman Gerdingh, creator of www.infoportwine.com, passed away on Friday 22nd Ferbruary 2013 following a long period of illness.

Herman and his wife, Elly, spent a decade creating one of the best sources of information about Port wine and were pioneers in reaching out to Port lovers across the world via the internet.

Please raise a glass to Herman's memory and to celebrate the legacy he has left behind.

This is very sad news indeed. It was a great pleasure to have known Herman and to have been able to drink port together on several occasions. I still have very fond memories of the last time I met Herman, at the 1977 tasting in Utrecht. With his enthusiasm, and the enormous amount of dedication and work he put into Infoportwine, Herman did a wonderful job for the promotion of Port wine. He and his website definitely played a big role in my initiation to and growing love for port, at the time when I just got into it. I hope many port lovers around the world will raise their glass to him.

Thank you for the information, Derek. I knew Hermann quite well and he helped me organising a lot of things when I started out with Port. Always humble and passed any detail that you wanted to have. I will keep him in my memory and will toast the next couple of decent Ports to him

I didn't remember that Herman was at the Utrecht 1977 tasting. Now I realise that I met Herman twice, once at the Utrecht tasting and once in the Douro Superior near Senhora da Ribeira. We toasted Herman on Tuesday night, a man who was at the forefront of using the internet to grow the knowledge and appreciation of the drink we all love.
