Quinta da Foz

Post by JacobH »

Located on the West bank of the Pinhão river, where it meets the Douro (hence its name), Foz has a visitors’ centre which is open from around 10 to 3. You get a little guided tour of the wine-making facilities and the cellars before a tasting. Oddly, the only thing they seem to be interested in is their table-wines: Cálem was only mentioned a couple of times and they gave no indication that Foz is one of the classic Port vineyards. The tasting therefore is therefore their white, rosé, and three red table wines. The cost of the tour is €5 but this is redeemable against any purchases in the shop. It therefore makes sense to pick up a bottle of their glugable Mutante for €12 if there are two of you!

Jacob,

Foz is no longer owned by Calem as it was retained by a family member (or members) when the brand was sold to Sogevinus a few years ago.

I think the quinta is now up for sale. Given its location and history it would be good if it ends up with one of the big players so that it can be revived as a prominent port-producing quinta.

Ah, that would make sense. It would also explain a comment about them not being able to sell any Port because they didn’t have any old enough (if all the reserves were sold to Sogevinus then there would be a few years’ hiatus as even a ruby has to be a few years old before it is sold).
