1927 Warre vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Honey coloured rim, pale brown centre. Molasses on the nose (mild bottle stink) and an intriguing baked apple. Refined entry, the wine still tannic, with cinnamon and all spice. The spiced "baked apple" theme held throughout the flavours in the mouth but was replaced by a sweet and enjoyable butterscotch for the aftertaste. Perfectly balanced wine, but not with the elegance of the Fonseca 1920. 92/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Although still very enjoyably, and indeed refined, I didn't quite get it with this port. Also, I didn't associate the taste with Warre. It had quite a thick mouthfeel, with lots of caramel and molasses. Seems to me like it should have been enjoyed a decade or two earlier. 90 points.
