Deep cherry red colour, medium rim and 99% opaque at the centre; no youthful scarlet but no mature bricking. Big nose of farmyards and bruised black cherries - sweet and dense but also with some odd elements of dirt. Woody on the palate, but with youthful black chocolate tannins mixed in with the sweet fruit and some emerging, substantial acidity. The palate gives the impression of a port that is not in balance at the moment. With patience, the palate pulls itself together. The aftertaste is a delicious mix of sweet black cherry and dry dark chocolate, with the same flavours running through on to the long and large finish. Tasty port, but one which will happily reward another decade in the cellar. Scored at 87/100.
Much improved with a further 24 hours in the decanter, showing much better balance with concentrated black cherry fruit and delicious ripe black chocolate tannins. With 48 hours of decanting time this justifies a score of 89/100.
