From the ‘Emergency’ 1985 horizontal on Wednesday 26th December 2007, in which we tasted Dow 1985, Infantado 1985, two bottles of Ramos Pinto 1985, Graham 1985, Warre 1985, Croft 1985, and Offley 1968 Colheita.

The following day, Thursday 27th December 2007, these bottles were joined by Taylor 1985 and Andresen 1985.

Offley Colheita 1968: what a revolting appearance! Cloudy yellow I-have-giardia-and-ate-too-much-milk diaoreaha. Yuk.

Nosing of sugar. In the mouth initially very hot, and the sugar not at all integrated with the whole. One thought “lemon iced tea†. Certainly needing air. Interesting, though not loved by me.

Loads of brown sugar and molasses on the nose.

disjointed to start but as we started drinking some more, this wine started coming together.

started disgusting muddy brown color.
with a thin sweet ice tea flavor

Best wine with english cheddar creating a beautiful blend of honey nuttiness that was just incredible.

after it opened it had a nice nuttiness with a underlying of sugar cane.

I meant it:

Hangover gone; glasses cleaned; dinner cooking. Time to write-up my tasting notes.

On the second day the Offley Colheita was still revolting to behold (picture above), and smell of bual. The sugar was far better integrated, and lemon came through faintly in the background.

This was my first Colheita, so I didn’t really know what to make of it.

This was a weird one. Offley 1968 Colheita. Very murky brown color, muddy. Nose sharply acidic, like a madeira, a little burnt and smoky. There is a curious scent that I associate with some of the older colheitas like this one; I call it 'musky jungle flower'. I've never been in the jungle, so I have no idea what I'm talking about, but that's what I imagine the smell to be like. Tart and acidic flavors that slowly grew on me. Don't quite know how to rate it, but I found it to be very interesting.
