Within the regulation week of DRT’s 51st birthday, we (DRT, JDAW, IDJ, AHB, THRA, SCD, CPR, ARM, and TC) brought “a bottle of VP, blind or sighted” to the Boot and Flogger.

Believed to be 1947 Smith Woodhouse. Bottles appeared consistent with the alleged vintage but labels appeared to be in remarkably good condition for bottles stored in damp English cellars for 65 years. The cork was also consistent with the alleged vintage but was branded Smith Woodhouse Oporto and no vintage could be discerned. This particular bottle was ullaged to mid shoulde and seeping slightly..

Dark amber-brown colour, 50% opaque. Oxidised nose with toffee and a touch of VA - unpleasant. The entry is balanced by the acidity with brown sugar and balsamic vinegar and lots of heat from the brandy. Brandy dominates the aftertaste, hot and cognac-like giving a long-burn finish. This is more like a mature cognac with a touch of date essence than a mature vintage port. 78/100.
