1966 Fonseca

Tasted as part of a 1966 / 1970 double horizontal of Dow, Fonseca, Graham and Warre.
Decanted at 20.30, tasted after dinner finished at 23.00. Of the four shippers from this vintage, Fonseca was the darkest, Graham slightly lighter and Warre being darker than Dow. The latter three all being the garnet colour of polished redwood with this wine being about 70% opaque. Subdued at first on the nose a swirl releases sweet maraschino cherry with a slight peppery twist, less developed than the Graham's from this vintage before it started showing TCA. A little light in texture, but fully flavoured with plenty of redcurrant and sweet cherry. The late palate shows well with a bite of sour raspberries. A huge burnt sugar finish full of crushed black pepper that delivers quite some heat. This is splendidly vigorous (and made a good toast to Morten's 51st birthday a couple of nights later). Still rather young I would expect this to be better in years to come. 89/100. 26-Jun-16. Decanted 2½ hours.
