1970 Fonseca

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Mature red in colour, 90% opaque. A wonderful nose of blackberry compote, enlivened with mace and curry leaf; complex and delicious. Balanced on the palate with mature fruit dominating but with lots of spice and liveliness. Generous acidity and even a hint of charcoal tannins complete the palate. A big aftertaste with a huge finish that fades gently to a lingering redcurrant. This is a great port right at its peak. Served blind this was guessed to be Cockburn 1970. 94/100. Drunk 25-Sep-16. Decanted ½ hour.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
