1980 Warre

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Two bottles were served at the dinner, this tasting note was taken from the weaker of the two bottles. Wide rim, dark red centre with some bricking tone. Harsh on the nose, surprisingly astringent and aggressive. By contrast this was fresh and vibrant on the palate with soft chocolate and gentle tannins wrapped in generous spiced fruit. Some complexity and additional layers of flavour show on the late palate but the tannins hold throughout and create a very dry mouthful. Some harshness shows on the aftertaste, but this fades very quickly to leave a very long finish of high cocoa milk chocolate. Quite tasty, but not a great bottle. 87/100. Drunk 15-Nov-16. Decanted 3 hours.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
