1977 Fonseca (Magnum)
An oversize crowd—possible because the bottles were all Magnums and Tappit Hens—gathered on Wednesday 1st February 2017 at the Boot and Flogger, to taste these large-format 1977s.

30% opacity, warm red. Smooth entry, gentle heat mid/late palate. Strawberries, a tannic finish. Very nice.

A magnum acquired from Turville Valley Wines. Light rose colour showing the tone of early maturity; 50% opaque. Attractive on the nose with sweet and mature fruit that has a slight hint of rose hips. Round and smooth in texture with a hint of heat at the edges; gentle fruit lurks in the flavours but the main impression is of hot, red licorice. Sweet and gentle on the aftertaste before the red licorice dominates the gentle finish. This port is lively on the palate, full of vigour, yet has a great balance and elegance to it. 92/100. Decanted 2 hours.
