1977 Warre (Magnum)
An oversize crowd—possible because the bottles were all Magnums and Tappit Hens—gathered on Wednesday 1st February 2017 at the Boot and Flogger, to taste these large-format 1977s.

25% opacity, red, amber rim. Fresh nose, fruity. Lovely smkooth entry with gentle heat mid to late palate. Red fruits, lovely sweetness. Great balance and structure, lip licking. Heat in the finish.

More evolved in colour than the Warre 1977 poured from Tappit Hen in the glass next to this one. This is a lovely burnished copper colour, around 40% opaque. Smokey nose combining charcoal ash with sweet rose hips, a combination which is very pleasant. Sweet, smooth and with a slightly thickened texture on entry this features a strong acidity that delivers a wonderful bitter citrus palate. The bitter citrus oil flavours dominate the aftertaste and finish giving an overall impression of a port which has a lovely elegance and concentration to it yet is in no rush to be drunk soon. 93/100. Decanted 4½ hours.

Interesting that this showed better than the Tappit Hen. I would have guessed the other way being the Tappit was larger.

That was my expectation too, especially given how good the Tappit Hens have been in the past.
