D67. From the personal cellar of Charles Symington (thank you—doff hat). Red, 30% opaque. Weird palate. Lots of candy. Fascinating, but absolutely not in the style of Dow, nor great. The candy just overwhelmingly what there was. PW said “treacle toffee”, which wasn’t my perception of it.

30% opacity, brown-red, yellow rim. Caramel and vanilla on the nose. Syrupy mouthfeel, mild acidity, sweetness along the palate. Soft sweet caramels with some tobacco hints. Body showing some hints of flabbiness.

A real treat to be able to taste this rarity - many thanks to Charles S.

A private family bottling, a bottle of which was generously donated to this tasting. The colour of oxidised copper with a pale orange rim; 20% opaque. Broad on the nose, wide and slightly stewed but with plenty of fruit. Sweet and fruity entry followed by a nice complexity and great concentration—treacle and toffee and sweet, dried fruits. While there are surprisingly still some tannins on the mid-palate, these lead to a late palate that is quite dry. Overall however, the palate is big and full. There is some heat on the aftertaste, which becomes very dry and full of bitter, concentrated blood orange. The port as a whole is slightly out of balance; a little like it is trying too hard. 88/100. Decanted 3 hours.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
