A half bottle bought from a bar on the quayside of Vila Nova de Gaia and shared with JDAW. Bottled 2009. Served chilled on a very hot day – a welcome piece of thoughtfulness by the owner of the bar.

Mature brick red colour, intensely pigmented with a medium rim and an opaque centre. Slightly brutal on the nose, plenty of fruit but aggressive and a little tanky; dominated by blackcurrants. Acidic entry, a little harsh. Aggressive on the palate with plenty of fruit and surprising levels of tannin. The aftertaste is a little jammy and leads to a finish with a good length. 84/100. 19-Jun-17. Pop 'n' pour.

JDAW: big and dark fruited; sharply acidic on the late palate. Slightly hollow mid-palate — needing 5 more years in the cellar.
