1957 Sandeman

Opened for dinner at O Paparico to share with Roy Hersh in celebration of his birthday where we consumed S55. S57, S66, S67 and Pinto dos Santos 1963. The darkest of the Sandeman ports was the 1967, followed by the 1957, the 1955 and the 1966. The Pinto dos Santos 1963 was about the same colour as the Sandeman 1957.
Deep burnished bronze colour, 50% opaque. Aged and mature on the nose, full of orange and molasses. Nice poised entry, a wine which is nimble on its feet and which delivers burnt sugar and and orange fruit. Later on the palate there is also a burnt toast tone to the fruit flavours. Soft acidity shows on the aftertaste, with soft tannins showing a little afterwards before a big finish of bitter-orange marmalade takes over. This is a nice port at or slightly past its peak of maturity. 89/100. 20-Jun-17. Decanted 2½ hours.
