CáF58, decanted 15:30. Dark red, 50% opaque. Nose of dark cherries. Palate of fruit indistinct but black, with sweetness, tobacco, leather. Very ver long. Simon found bubble gum early, which I found later. My best ever ’58. Indeed, there was something about the dark fruit, the early strength, lighter mid-palate, and long ending that hinted at Noval 1927. Not as big or fantastic, but a resemblance.

Bottled by the Wine Society. A lovely glowing red colour, mature in appearance but not so mature as to imply it might be fading; 50% opaque. Modest on the nose but showing some sweet redcurrant and golden sultanas. Delicious texture on the palate, nicely flavoured and with great poise. Good sweet fruit and a great concentration on the palate — big and very flavoursome. A lovely aftertaste but with lots of heat, then a big peppery finish full of rehydrated sweet golden sultanas and redcurrant cordial. There are even hints of tannins on the finish. This is an impressive and flavoursome port. 96/100. 3 hour decant.
