In a bottle of Fonseca 1963 was a question rather than a certain answer:

Recognising that this scientific question needed scientific experiment, a round dozen of us gathered to test some 1963s.

Good, but not as good as some D63 tasted previously, this one seemed to have some hollowness to the taste. Still enjoyable, but not all it could be. Better liked by the group who rated it third overall.

40% opacity, rich red. Intense fruit on the nose. Opens quickly on the palate, with a grapefruit (!?) burst and gentle acidity. Good structure, acidity holding it nicely in balance. Couldn't bring myself to offer any points though. Maybe that was a bit harsh.

D63: dark red, 60% opaque. Big dark cherries; slightly sour mid-palate. Very big, but balance less perfect than the Taylor.
