A crimson wine - the colour range of the 2017 Ports seems to range from an only red-black to a light crimson. A fat and fruity nose with lots of sour bramble fruit. Soft and velvety texture on the palate with perfumed purple fruit and a wonderful tannic core. Sweet, fragrant and with fruit a little fatter than most; the fragrance of the fruit really shows on the aftertaste and long chocolate finish. The finish is a little too sweet and sticky, but this was a decent Port. 88-90/100.

Sq17: raspberry, soft — indeed, lovely balanced softness. Light, but so very very long.

Two nights later delicious. Mid-to-light weight, perfume and red fruit, very soft and smooth; gentle heat late palate; the red fruit and perfume persisting into the length. To drink now, wonderful. Does it have old bones? Hmm – not many of this vintage will.

D7: An attractive spicy fruity, liquorice tinged red and black fruits. Surprisingly complex and open. Palate matches nose almost exactly with a slightly dryer finish. Excellent early term prospect.

Purity of red and black fruit- mainly raspberry and strawberry but also blackberry. The acidity is nicely balanced by the sweet fruit leading to a long finish. This is nice in its simplicity. 14.5/20
