1994 Niepoort VP

Opened for this event.

We poured this port into the decanter around 4PM. Initially very closed, other than a pronounced raw meat aroma. Hm, not sure where this is going.

Now, at 9.45PM, the nose is dominated by an off-putting paint aroma. Hardly anything else showing through. This is also predominant on the palate, accompanied by some sweet and sour fruit.

So far, it doesn't look good... :(

Let's see how it reacts to some more air.

Do you have a back-up bottle of something that you could pop 'n' pour?

I'd hate to sit here drinking this lovely RP94 whilst the guests of honour drink paint :?

There's still an open bottle of Otima 20YO around. If this doesn't work out, we'll switch to that.

Nowt wrong with the Otima 20yot. Shame about the Niepoort, hope it gets better some time soon.

The nose is still mainly paint, but the palate is getting better, with sweet round fruit (dense strawberry jam), creamy chocolate, and a touch of bitter greenness. This needs to come together further, but at least it's not a completely spoiled bottle.

I have the feeling this is going to be much better tomorrow.

Add a little paint to your ports and you wouldn't be drinking so fast.

All I have is Dulux Satinwood Drip-free - it has a spirity nose and the mouthfeel is rather thick but the aftertaste is the longest I've ever experienced

The port is rapidly improving. I will post a more detailed note tomorrow, as I have the feeling this is going to be quite nice then.

Or is it just that you manage those glorious locks on your head with hairspray?

Reassign to meaningless drivel please Admin. Just leave the bits relating to the Niepoort '94. Many thanks.

Alex,

I think you may find you are out-voted 2 Admins to None here.

This TN should be left intact as a constant reminder to Lord & Lady Roots of the quality of conversation and wine that they enjoyed on this night. It would be wrong to deprive them of the emotion attached to reading this again in future years simply to maintain the integrity of the TN database.

Sorry guys, I couldn't join this conversation earlier. First friday of March is always garanteed for the biggest hangover of the year..... (has to do with some sort of pub crawl..) so I went to bed too early Saturday....

Anyway, back to the port:
Yesterday, it made my headache even worse, but now it's actually relatively pleasant.
In the nose, just a little hint of paint (going to menthol), but mainly sweet rose hip and a bit dusty. The taste starts thin and sweet (syrup) with lots of milk chocolat, than becomes thicker and has some sort of body at the finish (almost spicy). Overall taste of paint.

I think this port is in some sort of strange phase, considering it's big improvement since yesterday and the total lack of (good) taste for a Niepoort VP.

BTW, Ronnie says it goes quite well with Coppa di Parma ;-)

Actually, it goes so well, he finished almost the entire plate of Coppa... I have to hurry, back to my meat!!!
cheers

LadyR,

We are honoured by your presence, as always.

I'm gald to hear that the Paint 2004 improved a little.

I wish you well in your new job in Oman and hope to see you and that husband of yours in the not too distant future. Make sure he goes out to work when you get there, even if he just ends up working all day looking for ways to import bottles of VP
