A newish shipper owned by an American / German ophthalmologist based at Quinta do Convento de São Pedro das Águias which is down the Rio Távora (one tributary downstream from the Rio Torto between Pinhão and Regua).
Brown centre fading to straw-like yellow on the rim. The nose is concentrated with oranges, some caramel and maybe a hazelnut or two. In the mouth there is immediate fresh citrus (even in to lemon territory) which swiftly fades into an extraordinary mixture of toffee and hazelnut with some glacé cherries which lasts a very long time. I cannot believe that this does not include some very old and very rare wines. If someone said it was a 50-year-old colheita I would have believed them. In a crowded field of 20-year-old tawnies this really stands out.
I do wonder if this is a blend of some very old family stocks and, accordingly, how long they will be able to keep this quality up but we should all enjoy it whilst it lasts. I’m giving it a vary rare C+ rating at the top of my scale.
