Decanted shortly before arriving at The Crusting Pipe, permitting this photograph of sediment:

1970 Cockburn: Strawberry pink-red, nosing of “large red cherry† — the size adjective referring to the quantity of aroma, not the size of the cherries. To taste lovely full rounded cherry and red fruit; though fading to a medium weight at the end.

Quite dark red. Floral nose. A little heat in the mouth with chocolate and a long finish. I noted this as being my 2nd favourite wine of the afternoon flight.

Clear centre but deep in colour, holding into the rim. A touch of VA on the nose. In the mouth this is warm and rich, with lots of ripe and sweet redcurrant fruit. Very full and mouthfilling and with a good body structure. Powerful development in the mouth with tannins still showing through. The aftertaste is long and dominated by fruit, going through two or three flavour phases. Very impressive. 90/100.

Miguel Côrte-Real sent AHB some of his own notes on the various vintages, some obviously drafted in advance, some from the day itself.

Generic Information
Declared by everybody with the exception of Ramos Pinto. It was the last vintage to be bottled in both Gaia and in the UK so there are some variations from bottle to bottle

Year/Viticulture
The weather was perfect but very hot at the start of the harvest, producing some raisined grapes and making the wines very ripe.

Tasting Notes
A soft, velvety, well-balanced wine. Not at all a full-bodied wine, but its quite rich and well developed. It's ready to drink.

Other
Medium-bodied, ripe cherry flavours. Very well balanced. Elegant and soft.

Deep blackberry and black cherry on the nose and similar flavours with plum and black pepper (L. Murphy)

Last minute notes
Another good example of a well ‟educated” vintage. Has everything but it's hot!!

MC-R notes
9.5/10
