2003 Barão de Vilar LBV (Claimed unfiltered)
My first Barão de Vilar, and my first 2003 LBV (of which, no doubt, we will be seeing much more as the shippers seem to have produced it in much greater quantities than 2002). It’s not entirely clear in my mind if it is unfiltered or not. The evidence for filtration is that the wine contained no sediment and the bottle doesn’t state that it is ‟unfiltered”, ‟bottle matured” or anything else of consequence. However, the spiel on the back makes a reference to decanting off the sediment, and Laithwaites (where I think this bottle came from) claims that it is unfiltered. It seems very odd, though perhaps they are worried that consumers are put off by decanting.

Anyway, I didn’t get a chance to take a proper note when the Port was at its peak, but after quite a bit of decanting time, the Port produced a lot of fruit flavours with a very full and robust backbone. Perhaps worth seeking out an older one or seeing how this develops. It might even through some sediment!
