1995 Petre

1995 Petre's Port vintage port
Reputed to be Dirk Niepoort's second wine, this was a deep red colour, slightly brown at the rim. Inviting, salty nose that reminded me of sweet strawberries. Sweet, plummy into the mouth. Sweetness carried through with the flavours of plums and damsons with a nice supporting acidity. Thick texture to the wine - no weedy, wateriness to this! Slight bitter edge to the wine. Tannins present but supportive and leading to a long, lovely and fruity aftertaste that slowly changes to a chocolately tingle. Overall, this was a very pleasant wine that could do with another year or two in the bottle. 88/100. Drunk on 27/7/06 after 12 hours in the decanter.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
