1983 Offley

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

From a bottle with a cork branded as "Offley Boa Vista 1983 vintage". A deep red colour, very little sign of aging or maturity. Very much a primary fruit driven smell - lots of sweet blackcurrants; initially very difficult to get past a rather overwhelming amount of spirit dominating the blackcurrant. In the mouth there was lots of sweet black fruit but this was a very young port, still tannic and raw even after 25 years. The aftertaste was disappointing, being very much led by the spirit and rather short. A wine to tuck away for another decade or to decant for 24+ hours, a serious heavyweight if it pulls iteself together properly. 88/100 after 3 hours of decanting. Drunk 11/12/08.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
