Bottled by Corney & Barrow. Clear colour, red but very pale. Oddly soapy on the nose. Sweet in the mouth with a slightly bitter olive flavour and some very grassy tones. Very atypical of the vintage and shipper. Lots of cranberries on the aftertaste, which is otherwise long and sweetly fruity. Smooth and enjoyable but not a typical bottle of this port. 90/100.

This wine had a lovely texture and colour but was otherwise disjointed and not what I would expect from Warre or from 1963. I kept a small sample which I will taste at some point soon to see if it pulls itself together.

Concur - a sound enough wine to drink, but it seemed inconsistant with both shipper and vintage.

Now has a delicate floral nose. Great texture and a lovely entry but it then goes horribly wrong with a very bitter and hot finish. What a shame. This port has so many good things to offer but it just can't hold it together.

The cork broke but didn't completely disintegrate, and it's in my car, so no then.

Yes - I decided that I'd put too much pressure on the poor thing knowing that it could have taken a dive. Better to let it die in good company with other Ports where it may have shone or fizzled than potentially fizzle away on its own. Turns out it was OK but not as good as it could have been - I did the right thing. I will get myself some other 1963s to compensate.

Good to hear it was still enjoyable, but a pity that it didn't show as good as it could have. But now that that one's gone, you're free to buy yourself some Fonseca 1963! And if you decide to drink that one day, we've got a Taylor's to match it.

Whilst muddling through some stuff, I found this sampler bottle that I took away with me from TPF Xmas 2008 - Thanks AHB. One would expect that a year or so on that this may not be all that. However, what has happened is that all the remaining grizzle has sunk to the bottom and left me with something distinctly tawny. What's more it is an excellent tawny, masses of orange and caramel, smooth in the entry with a good citric bang in the middle. Some softened dried mixed fruit appeal, like a home-made mince pie and a lovely soft finish that hangs around reminding you what you nearly missed. I would not normally suggest this as a plan for a 46 yo VP but it is truly lovely.

I never have surpisese like that.

Yes, I looked at that and wondered myself. I will make it a challenge for this year to get some 1963s in.
