Boxing Day, 26th December 2008, a modest selection of Fonsecas were sampled, really for the joy of doing so. There are several threads pertaining to this tasting.

.375 bottle

sediment decanted about 20 hours early and immediately poured back into bottle for "under cork" decanting.

ruby/purple colored with a sweet & unctously licoriced nose.

Fonseca 2000, at about D+18h, provided by MW. Very opaque black, just like a young Fonseca. marginally darker than the ’03. Nose very closed, with prunes, but there is fruit behind that will emerge in the fullness of time. To taste starting with spice (I wrote ‟spice-tastic”), then prunes and stewed fruit, and then, err, nothing. It just faded away all too fast. Very worrying. Are dumb-period ports usually that short?

Yes, that's quite normal.

This was beautiful just after bottling: an explosion of flowers, and dark fresh fruit. At this point, it just needs some more years in the cellar before it will shine again. Give it time.
