A sample kindly sent to me by AHB. Thank you.

The label on the sample bottle says "Sandeman" but it was virtually accompanied by an email telling me it is Warre 1985. I was also told that a TN thread existed for this bottle but I cannot locate it so have started a new thread.

Bright ruby red - reminding me of the Martinez 85 I have had a number of times in the past 2 to 3 years. Nice soft red cherry nose. Good weight with lots of red fruits and a little chocolate in the mid palate then quite hot in the finish. I will put the glass to one side for an hour to see if this calms down as the initial taste was lovely but the finish somewhat distracting.

Glad you enjoyed it. Heat in the finish is probably because it's been open for about 6 days.

3 hours after my first taste and the heat still dominates the finish. Not much has changed at all in fact. I will be very interested to read AHB's note on this when he get's around to posting it. The initial impressions were very good and hopefully are remnants of what AHB experienced in the hours after opening.

OK, OK. Here are the tasting notes that I thought I had posted, but hadn't. Allegedly.

Deeply coloured, going slightly rosy on the rim. Raspberry syrup on the nose with an interesting twist of lemon grass. Smooth and elegant entry, full of licorice and red fruits. Complex in the mid-palate with a lot going on. The longer you hold the port on the tongue, the more subtleties show themselves - but this is very difficult not to swallow. The tannins are fully integrated, but can still be made out, but most of the structural elements are coming from the ripe acidity. The aftertaste is extremely long, but is subtle rather than big and powerful. Just as you think the aftertaste has gone, you move your tongue and suddenly it comes flooding back. Absolutely delicious and drinking beautifully. Just hitting its plateau. Unlikely to improve from here but no need to drink in a hurry. 91/100. Drunk 22 March 2009.
