1991 Fonseca Guimaraens

Post by benread »

This is from a 1/2 bottle acquired recently. Initially promised to the Summer Wokingham offline, it has now been declared redundant from that event and hence its untimely departure tonight!

As would be expected from a young wine, this is quite a dark red colour, with a fine sediment on decanting. Decanted at 7.30pm and consumed from 9pm. (No will power I know!)

On the nose, it is a little like pear drops, but fruity as well.

To taste, lots of tannins. Lots! Quite a heavy port - it reminds me of the Malvedos 1987 I have tried recently. Everything about it says it needs more time, and yet it is very enjoyable to drink now. Oranges seem to be the most noticeable hint.

Were I to venture an "Uncle Tom" score, I would put this amongst the better VP's I will drink now so that warrants a 6 I think. However I do believe this may still get better, so I guess that means a 7.

6-7.

(And 500 posts up for me too!)
