NV Sandeman Ruby 3*

Sandeman 3* Ruby Port, believed to have been bottled before 1932 when the Don logo started to be used on the bottles. Slightly cloudy, a very pale brown - almost the colour of butterscotch. A maderised nose, showing caramelised sugar and black treacle. A much more pleasant palate than nose, showing oranges and marmalade and with a quince bitterness. Lively acidity keeps the wine together. A pleasant and lingering aftertaste, full of bitter oranges and of a very good length. Faded and elderly - and surprisingly drinkable. The nose did improve in the glass over a couple of hours. 83/100. Drunk 26 June 2009.
